New Beta Version, New Segmentation Tool

The latest beta release introduces advanced tools for segmenting computed tomography data, offering enhanced functionality for dental and maxillofacial applications. Key improvements include:

  • Automatic segmentation of teeth and jawbones: This tool highlights tooth and jaw surfaces in just a few minutes, significantly speeding up the process compared to semi-automatic methods.
  • Semi-automatic segmentation of user-defined volumes: Users can specify a region of interest, which is then converted into a 3D texture. This texture can be edited and saved as an STL file. The tool replaces optical density-based conversion, adding features such as removing internal and external shells and adjusting the local optical density threshold.
  • Semi-automatic segmentation based on STL surfaces: This tool works similarly to the previous one, but focuses on editing STL surfaces in 2D slices, considering the surrounding tissue’s optical density.
  • Improved editing tools: Available in all three segmentation modes, these tools allow for 2D slice and full 3D segment editing, including removing internal cavities and unwanted external objects. The primary editing tool, the “smart 3D brush,” locally adjusts surfaces based on the optical density of neighboring tissues.
  • Segment merging: This tool enables users to combine or subtract segments presented as 3D textures, similar to Boolean operations on STL surfaces.

These tools will be indispensable for every dentist, allowing for clearer visualization of patient diagnostic data and treatment planning in 3D, free from noise and artifacts. With just a few clicks, users can generate precise STL files of teeth, facial bones, and jawbones from CT data in minutes. Advanced users will appreciate these tools’ flexibility for a wide range of segmentation tasks!
